Dive into the Kelp Forest: Photography and Painting Exhibition at Perspectives Space, Encinitas
by Jasmine Novack and Oriana Poindexter
Meet the artists at the Opening Reception
Friday, December 6th, from 5 to 8 pm
Echoes from the Kelp Forest, a collaborative art exhibition featuring photographer Oriana Poindexter and painter Jasmine Novack, is coming to Perspectives Space in Encinitas, California. Opening to the public on December 6, 2024, the exhibit explores the artists’ shared experiences in the kelp forests of the Pacific coast, from Seattle to San Diego, blending art and science to reflect the beauty and complexity of the ocean.
Oriana Poindexter, known for her life-sized photographic records of marine life, uses traditional and alternative photographic processes to capture the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems. A graduate of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Poindexter’s work immerses viewers in the beauty and fragility of marine biodiversity. Her work has been featured in Smithsonian Magazine, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, and exhibited at the Oceanside Museum of Art, Laguna College of Art + Design, and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.
Jasmine Novack is a self-taught painter and cold-water scuba diver from Seattle. Novack’s work draws from her personal explorations in the kelp forests of the Pacific Northwest. Her evocative paintings reflect the psychological connection between humans and the ocean’s darker, unexplored depths. A graduate of the University of Washington with a focus on marine science and environmental justice, Novack uses her art to challenge perceptions of the ocean as a place of fear, inviting viewers to confront the “darker parts” of both the sea and the self. Her work is represented in Washington by the Seattle Art Museum Gallery.
The exhibition also features collaborative works, where both artists merge their distinctive mediums, creating pieces that highlight their shared experiences. Echoes from the Kelp Forest offers a unique blend of photography and painting, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the depths of both the natural world and human experience.
