Echoes from the Kelp Forest Exhibition

Dive into the Kelp Forest: Photography and Painting Exhibition at Perspectives Space, Encinitas

by Jasmine Novack and Oriana Poindexter

EXHIBITION DETAILS

Opening Reception: December 6, 2024, 5 to 8pm - Free with RSVP

For more information, visit www.orianapoindexter.com/installations/echoes

Echoes from the Kelp Forest, a collaborative art exhibition featuring photographer Oriana Poindexter and painter Jasmine Novack, is coming to Perspectives Space in Encinitas, California. Opening to the public on December 6, 2024, the exhibit explores the artists’ shared experiences in the kelp forests of the Pacific coast, from Seattle to San Diego, blending art and science to reflect the beauty and complexity of the ocean.

Oriana Poindexter, known for her life-sized photographic records of marine life, uses traditional and alternative photographic processes to capture the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems. A graduate of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Poindexter’s work immerses viewers in the beauty and fragility of marine biodiversity. Her work has been featured in Smithsonian Magazine, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, and exhibited at the Oceanside Museum of Art, Laguna College of Art + Design, and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

Jasmine Novack is a self-taught painter and cold-water scuba diver from Seattle. Novack’s work draws from her personal explorations in the kelp forests of the Pacific Northwest. Her evocative paintings reflect the psychological connection between humans and the ocean’s darker, unexplored depths. A graduate of the University of Washington with a focus on marine science and environmental justice, Novack uses her art to challenge perceptions of the ocean as a place of fear, inviting viewers to confront the “darker parts” of both the sea and the self. Her work is represented in Washington by the Seattle Art Museum Gallery.

The exhibition also features collaborative works, where both artists merge their distinctive mediums, creating pieces that highlight their shared experiences. Echoes from the Kelp Forest offers a unique blend of photography and painting, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the depths of both the natural world and human experience.

EXQUISITE CORPSE

STEAMROLLER PRINTMAKING PROJECT

SAN DIEGO MESA COLLEGE

HOSTED BY CAMPANA STUDIOS

OPENING ART RECEPTION THIS SATURDAY

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 4-7PM

In 2024 a group of 29 artists were selected by the Mesa College Art Gallery to contribute images for a series of collaborative prints. This selection of artist included current and former students, faculty, staff, and San Diego based artists who collaborated to create, print, and exhibit this series of large-scale prints. The project drew inspiration from the century-old Surrealist parlor game known as “Cadavre Exquis,” or “Exquisite Corpse” in English. An “Exquisite Corpse” is a collaborative drawing or writing game that originated in the early 20th century. The game invites participants to contribute in the creation of a collective piece of art or text without seeing what the others have created. The game has become a popular and creative way for people to produce unpredictable and imaginative works of art or literature.

Taking cues from iconic “Exquisite Corpse” artists like Marcel Duchamp, André Breton, Yves Tanguy, Frida Kahlo, and Henry Miller, this project also emphasized the use of a unique printmaking method: using a steamroller to transfer large images onto fabric sheets. Following the rules of the game, students designed sections of body parts above and below a waistline resulting in oddly disparate top and bottom half sections. These half sections were then interchanged and swapped with each other creating unique, playful, and unexpected whole-body pairings.

To create each printed image participants carved sheets of printmaking linoleum measuring 2 x 3 feet. After carving was completed, black ink was hand-rolled onto each block, allowing the designs to be transferred, much like a rubber stamp, onto long fabric panels. The large-scale print pairings, reaching over 72” in height, were printed using an industrial construction steamroller. Over six days, thirty-six blocks were successfully printed.

Friday Night Men’s Group

Meets every week

6 pm to 7:30 pm

About Andrew

I began attending this men’s group over 3 years ago after meeting and being invited by Justin Ternes, who formed the group. It wasn’t something that I sought out or was looking for, but it quickly became clear to me that it was something that I needed.

This group has been a massive benefit in my life. It has improved my ability to feel and express my emotions, improved my relationships, and provided a community of brothers who I can rely on for support when things are tough and celebrate with when things are going well.

My work as a physical therapist specializing in pain has led me to seek out many different ideas, approaches, and modalities. It has helped me to view pain through many different lenses, and been a catalyst for me to face my own pain and suffering. I see my work in continuing the Legacy of this group as part of my larger mission to reduce human suffering, for others as well as for myself.

And while I am the current “leader” of the group, the group is really led by its members. I am simply here to try to help preserve the values and integrity of the group as it continues to naturally morph and change.

Just show up or text/call Andrew at (301) 514-2954 with any questions!

Full Moon Release

Full Moon Release

Sunday, August 18th

6:30pm-8:30pm

Meet your facilitator: Makayla is a 200hr Yoga Teacher through Sage Yoga Studios in Fallbrook and is passionate about creating sacred spaces for individuals to come home to themselves. Makayla felt so disconnected from herself for years after experiencing debilitating chronic pain following a work injury. Discovering yoga and primal movement saved her life! She recognizes and honors the medicine that movement, meditation, yoga, and breath work have to offer. Makayla feels most connected to Spirit and herself when incorporating these in her daily practices.

About the event: The Full Moon in August is especially powerful because it is a Supermoon! This means the moon is unusually close to Earth, making it appear extra bright and beautiful. Because we contain so much water in our body, the moon intensifies emotions and boosts energy; an opportune time to sit with our emotions, release, and manifest.

This Full Moon Release incorporates deep meditation, yoga, primal movement/dance, breath work, and sacred journaling time. You don’t need to be a pro yogi or dancer to join, ANY BODY is welcome! Upon your arrival, we will do brief introductions followed by a guided meditation. You will set intentions for what you desire to release and what you want to bring into your life, then move energy with yoga, breath work, and primal movement/dance. We will close with journaling and commune in a gratitude circle.

To maximize your experience, please bring the following:

•Yoga mat or blanket

•Water

•Journal+Writing Tool

•Pillow for meditation and release

•Wear comfy clothes to do movement in

•An open heart and mind

With Gratitude and Blessings,

Makayla

Exchange: Please send Venmo or bring cash.

Adult Art Lab

NEW Weekly offering!!

Adult Art Lab

Life  is complicated and the more and more we consume and don’t take time to create and express… the more and more we move farther away from ‘feeling better’.

Why?…because we need to learn how to FEEL TO FEEL BETTER!

This is one of the main reasons I created ADULT ART LAB! My name is Robin Rene Burgin and I am a Somatic + Sensorimotor Art Therapy Practitioner. It is my mission to change how ADULTS experience ART!

I am excited to tell you more about ADULT ART LAB!

ADULT ART LAB is a weekly class that is designed to transport you back to a time of childlike wonder. Where, you are free to express yourself, let loose and let go of all your daily pressures. AND JUST BE without expectation.

ADULT ART LAB is built on the foundations of Sensorimotor Art Therapy®, Somatic Experiencing® and Neuroscience. Through art we will be curious, explore and learn about ourselves and what we hold inside.

Here, you simply get to BE AND DETACH FROM THE MONOTONY OF THE DAY TO DAY ADULTING AND be transported into a whole different realm of creativity and play that you haven't experienced since you were a child.

Which will allow you to release the pent up stress, overwhelm, and anxieties of daily life or begin to release the bracing, holding and grief from past lived experiences that may be leaving you feeling helpless, hopeless and isolated.

ADULT ART LAB is an environment that you can come to and drop all of that at the door and explore your felt sense with a professional who will hold space for you to creatively express yourself. Forget the pressure of creating a finished product or artistic perfection. Here, the focus is on the journey of exploration itself. Through various artistic mediums, be it painting, drawing, sculpture, collage or even poetry– you'll be guided to tap into your emotions and experiences, even those hidden from your conscious mind.

Each week you will be given a new creative practice to explore. No artistic skills needed! Only curiosity!

You will leave ADULT ART LAB:
🧠 KNOWING yourself better than ever before!
💪🏼 EMPOWERED by your inner wisdom
🌳 GROUNDED in your ability to access your cultivated resources for play, creativity, and passion at any moment.
🫶🏼 CONNECTED to a community of like-minded individuals who share your desires to flourish, grow, and create change.
🔥 REIGNITED to create a life YOU are proud of and build stronger relationships with yourself and others.

Feral by Elizabeth Brown

Campana Studios is excited to present ‘Feral’, an upcoming show of paintings by Elizabeth Brown

Artist’s reception on July 20th from 6-9pm

Elizabeth Brown is a California based artist who explores the relationship between personal narrative and visual engagement. Her playful, expressive and colorful paintings reveal the tension between freedom and control, as well as thought and emotion, the physical and ephemeral.

In these vibrant paintings, Elizabeth has multiple vantage points, seeing her world and the world of others, both predator and prey, to create dynamic compositions.

Campana Studios is a San Diego based visual arts non-profit that creates dynamic platforms for artists to engage within our communities.

Special thanks to the City of Encinitas, Department of Cultural Arts, and the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors for their financial support in bringing high quality, visual arts experiences, like this show, to our community.

🗓️ ADULT ART LAB IS EVERY THURSDAY, STARTING JULY 11TH | 5:30P-7:00PM @Perspectivesspace. ✍🏼 MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Magical Messages

Magical Messages

Thursday, June 27th

6-7:45 pm

Class Description:

I will start the session with a meditation for grounding and relaxation. I will then open up the channel to the Other Side and begin delivering magical messages from Spirit, the Angels, or even your Higher Self for healing, growth, and moving forward. I will give as many Readings as time allows, but not everyone may receive a Reading. Often Spirit brings multiple people together who will need to receive similar messages. I will then end the session with a short Q&A before thanking Spirit for bringing through the messages that were needed.

I believe that we are all always surrounded by Angels, Spirits and loved ones on the other side and that during a session, only the ones with messages for healing will step forward. These messages can come through as words, sentences, symbols, images, or feelings. Although not all attendees will receive messages, we know that these messages have the power to bring healing to all those who listen.

I would be honored to channel Spirit for you!

Artist/Medium Bio

Francesca Bandino is a Psychic Medium, Fine Artist, Energy Healer, and Spiritual Teacher.

In her work as a Medium, Francesca brings through messages from the other side for healing and guidance to help you move forward in this lifetime. She does this by communicating with loved ones who have passed, the Angels, your Spirit Team, the Ascended Masters, and your Higher Self.

Francesca considers herself a painter of feelings. She uses energetic movement and visible brush strokes to express her emotions and points of view, no matter what she paints. She feels the presence of Angels who often guide her through her creations. Her use of color is assertive and joyful.

Francesca’s mission is to help her clients continue their journey of healing and growth through her Spiritual work and her artwork. She wants those who work with her to know that we are never alone. We will always be guided and supported when we ask for help. Francesca began to show and sell her paintings in 2017 and started to have solo exhibitions in 2018. She then began the work of Medium and Energy Healer in 2020.

Francesca was born in Sardinia, Italy and raised in New Jersey. At the end of 2021 she drove across the country to settle in San Diego, CA. Francesca's objective was to be in the place that inspired so many of her paintings and continue the flow of beautiful creations.

Ritual Painting series by Brenda Zappitell

Ritual Paintings

Art installation

June 1 - June 30, 2024

About Brenda Zappitell:

My work flows directly from a deep well of intuitions and impulses. Standing in front of a blank substrate challenges me to draw on my memories while remaining in the present moment. While moving back and forth—letting each brushstroke take me where it needs to—I paint rapidly, racing to make the ephemeral tangible.

I begin without expectations and work on a subconscious level that disregards logic. Guided by a primal inner voice, I surrender control to the paint and the process itself. The layers of each painting remain as evidence of my energies, each one a kind of impression that helps me move towards substance. Although I’m drawn towards beauty, I know that it needs to exist in equilibrium with imperfection, and my process is always open to the discovery of these counterbalancing forces.

Inspired by the traditions and methods Abstract Expressionism, I feel a strong affinity for artists such as Joan Mitchell and Willem De Kooning, whose work also emphasizes action and emotion over ideas. Like these artists, I strive to capture fleeting images in an improvisational “alla prima” style.”

I look everywhere to find my imagery and am entranced by nature, in particular the sky. My mark-making, though serendipitous, emanates from these many visual impressions. I want the viewer to believe that my vision expands beyond the work itself to a universe I have created. When my work takes off, it seems to have a life of its own: an inner life that reflects something of my inner life. These fleeting “glimpses” are what I offer to those who encounter my paintings, and who are drawn to their multiplying energies.

Meet your teachers Nichole + Jeanine:

Nichole Anne Ferro is a Psycho-Somatic Trauma Recovery Coach, Somatic

Educator, Breathwork Facilitator/Educator, Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher Educator, Womb Medicine Women, and Ceremonialist.

She has been in the Healing Arts industry for 15 years and is devoted to

various practices of holistic healing. Nichole has over 3,000 training hours in trauma-informed; yoga, breathwork, somatic therapy, and nervous system recovery, and has over 10,000 teaching hours.

Nichole completed the year-long graduate-level program Compassionate Inquiry with Dr. Gabor Mate, 3 months certification from the School for Shamanic Arts, year-long program with Melanie Swan to become a certified Womb Medicine Woman, 50hr Somatic Psychedelic Facilitator certification through the Embody Lab with teachers such as Dr, Richard Schwartz, Dr. Peter Levine and more, and a year-long Somatic Educator certification through the Somatic Institute for women with David Bedrick, Dr. Saida Desilets, and more.

Through years of study and practice, Nichole has learned firsthand that the healing process is not linear but more like a spiral that contracts and expands. She believes surrendering to the spiral process of birth, growth, death, and rebirth is crucial to deeply understanding Self. She firmly believes we hold ancient wisdom within that is designed to heal old wounds and broken patterns that are holding us back from reaching our fullest potential.

Nichole is the Founder of Somatic Arts Academy. The Somatic Arts Academy is a school that offers certifications in various holistic and trauma-informed healing modalities. It was founded on the belief in the transformative power of the body-mind connection while profoundly normalizing the human landscape. The academy is a sanctuary for those seeking to explore the rich terrain of somatic arts facilitation, where the body becomes a canvas for creative expression, self-discovery, and holistic well-being - and you become the guide to support people’s transformation.

Nichole has developed the Embodied Breathwork Certification, and Guided Visionary Meditation Certification, and co-created the Somatic Arts Facilitator Certification with Jeanine Talento, for both in-person and online programs.

She is dedicated to helping others reclaim their body, mind, and spirit, and specializes in supporting others in reclaiming their authentic nature, reconnect with themselves, and create a life they love living.

Jeanine Talento, E-RYT 500, is a Trauma-Informed Educator, Yoga Teacher Trainer, Somatic Arts Facilitator & passionate writer. Jeanine believes in the power of healing through reclaiming the body as the central space through which we experience life. Jeanine believes that through nervous system education and embracing vulnerability, individuals can learn to revere and celebrate all parts of who they are, thus living more full and vibrant lives.

An outspoken and unconventional facilitator of 1:1 mentorships, Yoga Teacher Trainings, Somatic Facilitation courses, Retreats & Women’s circles, Jeanine brings a light hearted approach to Trauma-Informed work that normalizes and releases shame around the difficulties of being human. A firm believer that healing requires a sense of humor, Jeanine loves to infuse her lectures and trainings with the opportunity to reclaim joy, playfulness, and laughter. The foundation of Jeanine’s work is that liberation from trauma requires a collaboration of compassionate inquiry, somatic curiosity, releasing shame, and recognizing our limiting core beliefs. The mission of all Trauma-Informed endeavors is to create a safe space where folks can explore their inner landscape with patience and permission.

Jeanine’s yoga journey began in 2006 in New York City as a way to seek relief from mental health struggles including anxiety, OCD, and insomnia. Little did she know, the same perceived suffering that brought her to Yoga would be exactly what she alchemized into her power, purpose, and personalized offerings. Jeanine uses a multidisciplinary approach to body-based interventions that gradually guide her clients to orient towards feelings of safety and regulation within their physical form. Her work is invigorated by and founded on the belief that:

Soma is Spirit & your embodiment is your art.

In other words, the precious and nuanced journey back home to the body is a spiritual endeavor that opens us up to a life of more meaning, expression, and connection.

A long time student of Psychology, Jeanine is adamant about the intersection of Yoga and Trauma-Informed principles. She received her B.S in Psychology and Communications in 2013 from CUNY Queens College and has 3000+ hours of Trauma-Informed Training. Jeanine weaves the powerful topics of Yoga for Mental Health, Addiction, and Trauma into YTT curriculum in a way that is accessible, inclusive, and allows for integration.

Jeanine is committed to her on-going development as a teacher, space holder, and human being. Jeanine completed the year long graduate level program Compassionate Inquiry with Dr. Gabor Mate, six-month Introduction to Internal Family Systems with Dick Schwartz, a year-long Certificate in Contemplative Psychotherapy at the Nalanda Institute, and an Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy Certificate through The Embody Lab.
